Excursions

Oana Duma (r) of Wild Whiskers Creative Learning and

Denise Clark Priest (l) of Cut The Crap Parenting and The Shoals Center team up to bring you excursions

into nature that will leave you renewed.

They are passionate about sharing their knowledge

and love of the natural world with others

and love to experience it through others' eyes.

Upcoming Opportunities

3-States Nature Extravaganza

Denise and Oana are excited to lead their second excursion to the beautiful Southern Appalachians. Geared towards people ages 10 and up (though exceptions are considered,) this trip is designed to allow participants to comfortably enjoy Mother Nature while being supported in their desire to explore and try new things with old and new friends. On this excursion, the group will decide each day's destinations from a list curated to provide a variety of experiences.

Homebase

The Appalachian Folk School, nestled in the northeast Tennessee mountains, is home-base for 3-States Nature Excursion. Founded by Dr. Warren Doyle, The Folk School is conveniently located near many significant natural resources and offers a quiet place to rest and regroup.

Lodging

Participants are housed in the bunkhouses

with at least one adult chaperone.

Bunks

"G'night, John Boy!"

Bunkhouses nurture a spirit of camaraderie with late-night chats.

Fresh mountain air coming through the windows with the sounds of peepers for a lullaby and the dawn chorus for an alarm clock...ahhh!

Dining

Meals are home-cooked, and participants help according to their ability and talents. Planning and packing up for the day happens here, in the classroom building.

Bath House

The bath house is centrally located between the bunkhouses and the classroom building. There are separate rooms for males and females.

Picnic Pavilion

The picnic pavilion, located directly behind the bath house, is a great hangout spot. It's perfect for just chatting or playing board games, or dining al fresco!

Libraries

The Appalachian Folk School has several libraries spanning many subjects.

The Yard

It sounds so simple, but when it comes to kids, The Yard needs no explanation. And especially when it comes to a yard with an incredible hill!

Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at Denise@TheShoalsCenter.org or WildWhiskersCreativeLearning@gmail.com

if you cannot find an answer to your question.

We’re wondering that, too!  We’ll be preparing family-style meals and will accommodate the most people possible. We think there will be some things we can all agree on. Could you please send us your top 3 favorite breakfasts, lunches, and dinners?

Feel free to bring along whatever device you’d like to use to communicate with people back home. We’ll set aside a couple of times each day for checking in. If you’d rather not bring a device, we’ll be sure to let you use one of ours! Outside of that time, electronics will be stored securely for safety.r

Great question! Snacks are really important for feeling good and having lots of energy on busy days. Participants are asked to pack their own snacks for the trip. Remember that a balance of carbs and fat and protein help us to feel full and stay full so think about that as you’re planning. If you’d like to make a list and send it over, we’ll be glad to give you some feedback.

As with any trips, there will be opportunities to purchase.. Each participant will be responsible for their own money and have complete autonomy over it.
